Playful Broadmead
THE BRIEF
We were invited to participate in Bristol BID’s ‘Love Bristol, Love Broadmead’ programme and ‘Playful Broadmead’ summer project designed to promote the Broadmead shopping district in Bristol City centre. The programme aimed to rethink the high street and the initative provided a playful way for shoppers and visitors to engage with the city by installing imaginative miniature fairy portals on buildings along the main pedestrianised routes, delighting passers-by and providing a fun trail activity for families to enjoy during the summer.

OUR PROCESS
We partnered with companies located in the shopping district, creating miniature doorways to suit their brand and individual nature of business. The models were made using recycled materials and were durable, child-safe, weather-resistant, imaginative and suitable for long-term outdoor display. Working with the ideas and brand guidelines for each organisation, the doorways imagined a parallel fairy universe at the foot of each building and included a tiny bank vault, retro cinema front, WC and store entrance built from recycled wood and spare LEGO bricks.
THE RESULTS
Launched on National Play Day, the Urban Fairy Doors Trail ran throughout the Broadmead, Quakers Friars and Cabot Circus area, with over 30 businesses taking part in the initiative.
The installation was well received by the general public and businesses alike, encouraging visitors to slow down, notice details and rediscover the city centre with fresh eyes. The initative bought a new sense of discovery to Bristol City centre, creating a welcoming public art experience for all ages.
